Drop a coin into the Trevi Fountain, tour the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hills, dine at the Ginger Sapori e Salute near the Piazza Navona or take a round of the Pantheon: one never runs out of sights, tastes and experiences in Rome. But there is so much more to see and do in Rome beyond the well-beaten paths of the Eternal City. So fasten your seatbelts and enjoy this read-up on Rome to discover lesser-known sites.
Pyramid of Cestius
Yes, you read that right; Rome has a pyramid – the Pyramid of Cestius. Built around 12 BC, it is the tomb of Caius Cestius, a member of the Epulones religious corporation. The monument, one of the best-preserved ones in Rome, lies at the intersection of two ancient roads and is worth a visit, time permitting.
Fabricius Bridge
When done touring the most popular monuments of Rome, take a riverside walk and marvel at the many beautiful bridges that cross the Tiber. The oldest amongst them is the Fabricius Bridge. Built in the age of Caesar in 62 BC, the bridge was named after the road maintainer for that year, Lucius Fabricius. The bridge is one of the oldest in all of Europe and Rome’s best it preserved arch-bridge, a testimony to Roman engineering.
Orange Garden
Rome has a beautiful, little known garden dedicated to orange trees. But love for the citrus fruit is not the only reason to head up there. You will also be rewarded with a sight of St. Peter’s Basilica and a panoramic view of Rome because the park stands at the top of one of the city’s seven hills, the Aventine Hill. The park is near the famous “Mouth of Truth” and the Circus Maximus.
Rome’s Keyhole
The marvel is a must see if you are on your visit to Rome. Located just a few hundred meters from the Orange Garden, this sight is also on the Aventine Hill. The keyhole is carved into the door of the Knights of Malta’s headquarters. But it is no ordinary keyhole. When you look through it and you’ll discover a garden and beyond it, perfectly framed by the well-manicured trees, the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica – it is one of the most magical views in the city, so do not forget to take your camera along.
Mosaic making classes
You must be familiar with the paint and sip classes across Rome but do you know there a mosaic jewel making classes as well? These classes, in the heart of Rome, provide you with the raw materials needed to make the jewellery and an instructor will guide you in the craft of the 19th century artisans who designed gifts for the Pope. It is a wonderful opportunity to design your own unique souvenir.
There are even more great places to see, neighbourhoods to discover and street foods to be enjoyed. But that is for another day and another read. Meanwhile, try visiting the places listed above for your unforgettable tour of Rome.
